Introduction
The unveiling of a new government building is an event that warrants excitement and anticipation. One such instance is this new library in Brisbane. But while most people will see the final product, few understand the process that leads to the finished structure, particularly the painting aspect. This blog post will delve into the key stages of painting a new government building, using the new Brisbane library as a case study.
Choosing the Right Paint
The first step in painting a new government building is choosing the right paint. Given the public nature and high usage of these facilities, it’s crucial to select a durable paint that can withstand wear and tear. The paint should also be easy to clean and resistant to fading. For the new library in Brisbane, a high-quality, water-based paint was chosen for its durability and fade resistance, specifically we opted for Dulux Professional Interior range. The colours for this project were provided by the architect responsible for designing the space.
Preparing and Priming the Surface
The next step involves preparing the surface for painting. This process typically includes cleaning the walls, filling in any holes or cracks, and sanding the surface to ensure it’s smooth. After the surface is prepared, a primer is applied. Priming is essential as it helps the paint adhere better to the surface, improves paint durability, and provides additional protection for the walls. In the case of the Brisbane library, special attention was given to surface preparation and priming to ensure a long-lasting finish.
Key Operational Requirements
It is imperative to ensure all of our boys are working together as this type of project typically will have short deadlines to meet and we will be working alongside many other trades, we must liase with the site managers and project managers to ensure we have access to specific areas when we need it and to ensure we are completing areas requiring trades to follow behind us in time. For this project specifically we had deadlines to remove access equipment from site before the extra bracing of the slab was removed, we also needed to stay ahead of the cabinet makers fitting off the timber feature panels over the walls we had painted.
Conclusion
Painting a new government building, like the new library in Brisbane, is no small task. It involves careful planning and execution, from selecting the right paint to preparing the surface, and finally, the paint application. The result of these meticulous efforts is a stunning public building that is both durable and inviting.
